Major Job Functions The following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job. The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below. In addition, specific functions may change from time to time: Handle and manage instruments in the operative field to prevent obstruction of the surgeons’ view or access to the operative areas Provide retraction, hemostasis, knot tying, suturing and place suture ligatures Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure Follow aseptic/sterile technique Assist in carrying out patient’s plan of care by performing assigned tasks within scope of practice and according to unit guidelines of care, hospital and nursing policies and procedures, and legal limitations Assist with maintenance, selection and preparation of instruments, equipment and supplies necessary to maintain a state of readiness for operative cases Maintains confidentiality of patient information Support patients in the practice of their cultural and spiritual beliefs within limits of the medical regimen Adjust patient care based on the age specific physiological and psychosocial needs of patients typically served Participate in educational and performance improvement activities Other duties as assigned Minimum Qualifications The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job: Education and Formal Training: High school diploma or equivalent required Completion of Surgical Technology Program or equivalent training required First Assistant Credentialing Program certification and endorsed by the Liaison of Surgical Technologists required Certification from Association of Surgical Technologists preferred Work Experience: 2 years’ experience as surgical technologist first assistant required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required: Ability to work with complex monitoring and life support equipment Ability to perform in cardiac service Knowledge of standard precautions and sterile techniques Knowledge of age specific physiological, psychosocial, developmental, spiritual needs of patients served Self directed to learn and achieve unit objectives Physical Requirements: Reads, writes, and speaks English Ability to tolerate long hours and work variable shifts Much standing, walking, bending, lifting, transferring of anesthetized patients, and pushing of heavy carts, stretchers, and equipment Manual dexterity and good eye-hand coordination Visual and auditory acuity required Position involves skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infections material Required Licenses and Certifications CST - National Board Of Surgical Technology And Surgical Assisting Cape Fear Valley Health System is an Equal Opportunity Employer M/F/Disability/Veteran/Sexual Orientation/Gender Identity For exceptional healthcare come to Cape Fear Valley Health where caring employees are committed to integrity, patient-centeredness and excellence throughout the entire healthcare process.
