    SUBSTITUTE CLASSROOM TEACHER
      

    DESCRIPTION          

    Under the direction of the school administrator, is responsible for providing instruction, managing the classroom environment, and promoting student learning in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. 

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

     
    1. Provides instruction in the absence of the classroom teacher to ensure consistency in the educational program. 
    2. Prepares a written summary of work completed.
    3. Assumes all duties and responsibilities of the absent teacher.
    4. Follows the teacher’s written lesson plans. Consults with the principal and/or staff to resolve questions and/or concerns.
    5. Complies with all building procedures and schedules. 
    6. Makes the absent teacher aware of special situations or problems encountered.
    7. Upholds District policies and follows administrative procedures. 
    8. Implements effective pupil management procedures. 
    9. Intervenes when appropriate and/or reports concerns to an administrator.
    10. Maintains a positive learning environment.
    11. Works cooperatively with staff and parents.
    12. Takes precautions to ensure staff/student safety. 
    13. Does not leave students unsupervised.
    14. Supervises non-classroom duties when assigned. 
    15. Performs other specific job-related duties as directed.
    16. Takes attendance, administers quizzes and tests, explains assignments, collects homework.
    17. Provides general supervision during class periods and throughout the school campus.
    18. Models respectful and polite interactions with all students.
    19. Takes necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, and materials.
    20. In long-term assignments, substitute classroom teachers may be required to lesson plan, assess student work/progress, and submit grades/marks to administration.
     

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Education
    An earned bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university

    Credential
    - A valid teacher credential issued by the California Commission on Teacher
    - A valid California 30-day Substitute Permit 
    - or California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) or equivalent (Credentialing which may be obtained after selection for the position;) 


    KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

     
    1. Ability to follow and implement written lesson plans.
    2. Ability to communicate effectively by providing clear, concise instruction using academic language.
    3. Ability to listen without bias and provide appropriate feedback.
    4. Ability to demonstrate proficiency in written and oral English.
    5. Ability to work effectively with all racial, ethnic, linguistic, economic, and disability groups.
    6. Demonstrate understanding, patience, and approachability toward students, parents, and colleagues.
     
    SUPERVISION
    Under the Supervision of the Site Administrator/Designee 

    WORK CALENDAR

    This is a day-to-day, on-call assignment.  Substitute teachers are expected to work at least 30 days during the school year, with at least three days each calendar month.    A substitute classroom teacher is expected to be on site for seven hours, including time for lunch and breaks.    

    RATE OF PAY

    $200 per day.  Long-term assignments are paid at the rate of $240 per day, which is made available on the 11th consecutive day in the same assignment.
