B&W S&T Consumer Science Research Manager Schedule: Full-time Primary Location: Port Sunlight Other Locations: NA Shift: Day Job Job: Research/Development Travel: Limited WL: WL2A Description Consumer Science Research Manager - (1FTE) MAIN JOB PURPOSE: The role of the Science & Technology (S&T) team is to deliver breakthrough technologies and differentiated innovations to meet the needs and preferences of our consumers around the world. Consumer Science plays a critical role in defining, evaluating, and shaping noticeably superior technical innovations for Unilever’s Beauty & Wellbeing Business Group. An opportunity has arisen for an experienced and talented scientist in the field of multi-modal sensory perception to join the B&W S&T Consumer Science team in our laboratory at Port Sunlight. The priority for this new role will be to bring leading edge developments from the rapidly expanding scientific fields of multi-model sensory perception to shape the quantification and optimization of the perceived superiority of our technologies and products. For this role, the candidate must have a proven understanding of, and passion for the science of multi-model sensory perception, hedonic responses psychophysiology and neuroscience, and research methods for measuring subjective and physiological responses in relation to sensory perception, and hedonic responses. The role requires: • Deep scientific expertise and strong analytical skills relevant to multimodal sensory perception. • Proven skills synthesizing scientific developments into peer-reviewed published papers, reports and presentations. • 10+ years-experience working with/at academic institutes including leading collaborative projects between industry and academia and extensive academic network. • Ability to link leading-edge sensory and brain measurement/endpoints to biological and technical measures is a plus. • Ability to collaborate effectively with other internal teams (including different science platforms, Clinicals, CTI, formulation team) and external partners (academic and non-academic). • Strong communication skills and experience working in teams located in different geographies. • Experience in neuroscience techniques, includes EEG, MRI, eye tracking and programming in MATLAB and/or Python is a plus JOB SUMMARY • Provide externally recognised scientific leadership for sensory perception research projects to ensure appropriate rigour (quality of science) in incl. the selection of methods, design of studies and latest approaches to analyses. • Commitment to shape and lead collaborations within S&T CS team, across functions, and with external partners to deliver against B&W ambitions and business needs. • Contribute to the development of key capabilities for Consumer Science, including exploring and identifying emerging relevant research opportunities to address unmet consumer needs. • Experience at co-creating scientific experiments with external scientific thought leaders/academic partners. • Translate findings from experiments and literature research into actionable insights and effective scientific communication. • Build and maintain expertise of current state of the art in sensory and neuroscience based on internal and external literature. • Coach, mentor, and upskill other team members globally in the research area of multimodal sensory perception and neuroscience. KEY REQUIREMENTS • PhD degree in a relevant scientific discipline (Sensory/Cognitive/Affective Neuroscience, Neuroeconomics, Social/Cognitive/Experimental Psychology), plus some industrial R&D experience. • Evidence of deep scientific expertise in relevant area, e.g., sensory perception, neuroscience & wellbeing, with a strong track record of peer-reviewed external publications. • Excellent written, verbal and visual (e.g., presentations) communication skills to help translate findings into actionable results for senior leaders and cross-functional experts. • Strong analytical and experimental design skills and experience generating insights and technology guidance. • Demonstrated ability to thrive in ambiguous situations. • Passion for high performance, both personally and for the team, with an ambition to continually strive to maximise CS’s impact in line with the S&T strategy. • Able to work both in a global team and independently. • Understanding of Unilever’s other Science & Technology and Clinical functions and proven ability to identify opportunities for synergistic collaboration is a plus. • Experience working with Beauty & Wellbeing categories is a plus.
