OVERVIEW OF POSITION / DEPARTMENT Performs technically skilled work in the operation, maintenance, repair, installation, and control of complex facilities, equipment, and systems to support the operations of the Water Treatment division. PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Monitors and inspects facilities, equipment, machinery, and systems to determine need for repair Leads work crews in the repair and maintenance of water, wastewater, and reuse equipment including water storage tanks, chemical feeders, tanks, pumps, motors, piping systems, valves, and treatment facilities Coordinates scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and repair of water plant equipment, structures, and buildings Performs installation of materials, fixtures, equipment, and systems Checks equipment for proper operation Designs and fabricates equipment parts as necessary Monitors and oversees confined space entry by crews Maintains inventory of parts and supplies Trains subordinate employees as appropriate Acts as lead worker Mixes and loads chemicals Maintains plant security Maintains O&M logs and records Basic knowledge of the city computer systems Performs janitorial, building, and grounds maintenance Uses tools such as hand tools, shovel, jack hammer and power tools Assist with snow removal activities and snow standby call duties Performs other related duties as assigned MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered. Education: High School Diploma or GED Experience: Experience: 5 years’ work experience related to technical skilled labor preferred, as listed in the Primary Duties & Responsibilities section 2 years in water or wastewater treatment operation and maintenance experience Preferred Qualifications: Associates degree in water technology or water quality management preferred Knowledge: Knowledge of chemistry, biology, math, and hydrology; pumps, valves, motors, filters, backflow prevention devices, piping, and pumping structures Knowledge of the city computer systems Knowledge of servicing, repairing, adjusting, and testing machines, devices, moving parts, and equipment that operate primarily based on mechanical principles. Knowledge of safety practices and requirements of a water treatment plant Knowledge of personal computers and related software. Skills: Skill in the use of hand tools. Strong interpersonal skills Skill in the use of windows-based programs Skill in checking information for accuracy and completeness and correcting errors Abilities: Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, all levels of management, and citizens Handle sensitive situations with tack and diplomacy Communicate effectively both orally and in writing Direct and effectively supervise a diverse workforce Creatively solve problems, negotiate and handle stressful situations in a positive manner Perform mathematical calculations Perform chemical analyses Understand oral and written instructions instruct and train other employees Read and comply with blueprints, diagrams, schematics, manuals, and specifications Ability to operate or receive training on various types of maintenance and construction equipment Ability to work shifts and nights; and work overtime, standby, and/or callback duty Must be able to wear personal protective equipment required for the job and able to meet requirements under the Aurora Water Respiratory Protection Program. Ability to take part in Aurora Water’s Permit Required Confined Space Rescue Team Perform manual labor for extended periods of time Licenses and Certifications Required: Colorado Water or Wastewater Treatment C Certification Colorado Water Distribution or Wastewater Collection I Colorado Driver's license with a good driving history WORKING CONDITIONS Continuous work indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to noise, dust, and fumes. Continuous work in and around chemical feed areas with exposure to hazardous chemicals while wearing appropriate PPE. Frequent work may be performed in confined spaces with exposure to raw sewage; will be exposed to low and medium electrical voltage. Essential Personnel: When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel. Physical Demands: Medium work that involves moving no more than 50 pounds with or without assistance at a time. Continuous walking and standing. Frequently performs activities requiring a full range of body movement including bending, stooping, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and climbing. Hand/eye and hand/foot coordination for operation of equipment and vehicles. Clear vision to read and interpret reports, other written documents, process and equipment gauges, and alarms. Speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens. Hearing/listening for instructions and warning signals. Work Environment: Works indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to noise, dust, and fumes. Works in and around chemical feed areas with exposure to hazardous chemicals while wearing appropriate PPE. Some work may be performed in confined spaces with exposure to raw sewage; will be exposed to low and medium electrical voltage. Participate in the City's snow removal program. Equipment Used: Operates equipment and vehicles common to utilities maintenance functions. This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.
