Looking for a hands-on role that makes a difference?

At SMS Environmental, we don’t just maintain water systems — we protect people’s health and keep environments safe from Legionella and other water hygiene risks. If you’re a skilled Water Hygiene Engineer who takes pride in doing things right the first time, we want you on our team.

What will I be doing?

You’ll be out on the road, visiting a variety of client sites — from hospitals and schools to commercial and industrial settings — making sure their water systems are compliant, clean, and safe.

Your day-to-day will include:

  • Carrying out planned preventative maintenance (PPM), sampling, flushing, disinfecting, and chemical treatment of water systems
  • Performing remedial works, tank cleans, and chlorination
  • Ensuring compliance with ACOP L8, HSG274, and other water hygiene regulations
  • Recording and reporting site activities accurately using company systems
  • Spotting and reporting system issues before they become bigger problems
  • Representing SMS Environmental professionally with clients on-site
  • Supporting and mentoring newer engineers as part of a collaborative team

What do I need to be successful?

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Has proven experience in water hygiene, treatment, or Legionella control
  • Understands water hygiene legislation and best practice
  • Communicates clearly and confidently with clients and colleagues
  • Works well independently and manages time effectively
  • Holds a City & Guilds qualification (or equivalent) in Water Hygiene
  • Has a full UK driving licence
  • Ability to pass Disclosure and Barring Service clearance (Enhanced DBS check)

Bonus points if you’ve got a knack for problem-solving and love a job that keeps you moving and learning.

What’s in it for me?

We take care of our people — because you take care of our clients. Here’s what you can expect:

  • 37.5 hours per week – 8am–4pm (Monday–Friday)
  • Paid overtime available
  • 22 days holiday per year plus bank holidays, with an extra day for your birthday after 2 years’ service
  • Company iPad & Mobile Phone
  • Brand new uniform, equipment, tool bag & PPE
  • Modern, fully serviced company van with a business fuel card
  • Trade cards for quick access to new supplies
  • City & Guilds Affiliated Training Programme – we invest in your professional growth
  • Private medical care or alternative cash plan after 2 years’ service
  • Enhanced sick, maternity & paternity leave
  • 24/7 Employee Assistance Programme
  • Employee discount scheme – save up to £240/month on food & groceries
  • Core Values Champions Rewards – quarterly peer nominations with vouchers
  • Annual development & review process – because we believe in your progression

We’re not your average water hygiene company. We’re a team of passionate professionals who value safety, integrity, and continuous improvement. Every member of our team plays a vital role in keeping people safe and facilities compliant — and we make sure you feel recognised and rewarded for the work you do.
