Accountabilities: • Strategic management and governance: Lead AstraZeneca’s multi-jurisdictional indirect tax compliance, risk management, and transformation initiatives, ensuring alignment with Group objectives. • Foreign indirect tax compliance: Oversee foreign indirect tax compliance obligations, navigating complex regulatory frameworks and resolving issues effectively. • Global indirect tax strategy: Contribute to the development and execution of AstraZeneca’s global indirect tax strategy, driving sustainable value creation. • Risk and controls: Develop and maintain comprehensive indirect tax risk management frameworks, including governance over controls testing and continuous improvement. • VAT audits and controversy: Lead complex VAT audits and controversies, fostering constructive relationships with tax authorities. • Supply chain advisory: Provide guidance on indirect tax impacts for commercial and clinical operations supply chains. • Business partnering: Offer timely VAT guidance to partners on business-as-usual and new operations, supporting business initiatives proactively. • Complex technical advisory: Research and advise on intricate VAT issues such as cross-border supply rules and multi-jurisdiction reorganizations. • Digital transformation: Support enterprise transformation initiatives by integrating advanced analytics, AI, and tax technology for enhanced compliance and efficiency. • Process excellence: Find opportunities for process improvement and harmonization. • Accounts Payable and Purchasing Organization (APPO) support: Provide expert indirect tax support to AstraZeneca’s APPO community, resolving technical queries. • Outsource provider management: Collaborate with compliance outsource providers to drive improvements in compliance, data quality, and efficiencies. • Risk escalation and coordination: Identify and escalate compliance risks, ensuring holistic tax outcomes across direct tax, customs/duties, and transfer pricing. • Contribute to the development of the wider tax function through coaching and mentoring junior team members, champion Diversity and Inclusion strategies. Essential Skills/Experience: • Education: Degree in accounting, finance, law, or related field. Professional qualification preferred (e.g., CTA, CPA, ACA, or equivalent). • Experience: Demonstrable post-qualification experience in multi-jurisdictional VAT/indirect tax within a multinational or Big Four/major advisory, with consistent record across compliance, advisory, and controversy. • Technical expertise: Deep knowledge of EU VAT (strong preference for UK/SE/IE/other EU member experience) and US foreign indirect tax obligations (e.g., VAT/GST for US outbound activity and registrations outside the US), place of supply rules, chain transactions, E-invoicing/real-time reporting, and tax determination engines. • Transformation: Demonstrated experience delivering tax technology and ERP-enabled change (e.g., SAP S/4HANA, GTS, Vertex/ONESOURCE, APPO), data governance, and process optimization. • Personal attributes: Strategic thinker with a hands-on approach, high ownership, resilience, and continuous improvement outlook.
