Job Details Job Location: Claflin University Main Campus - Orangeburg, SC 29115 Position Type: Full Time Education Level: 4 Year Degree Salary Range: $50,000.00 - $51,350.00 Salary/year Travel Percentage: None Job Shift: Day Job Category: Other Reports to: Assistant Vice President of Academic Coaching & Student Succes Position Summary The Student Success Academic Coach at Claflin University provides comprehensive academic coaching and personalized support to students from initial enrollment through degree completion. The Coach is responsible for implementing a holistic academic coaching strategy that includes one-on-one guidance and scalable interventions designed to promote student success, persistence, and timely graduation. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Provide individualized academic coaching to support students’ successful transition to college and continued academic progress. Develop, implement, and monitor individualized academic degree and success plans aligned with students’ academic and personal goals. Track student progress, analyze academic challenges, develop solutions, and forecast outcomes to support retention and completion. Maintain accurate and confidential student records, documentation, and advising notes in compliance with FERPA and University policies. Collect, monitor, and evaluate student data, including grades and academic performance, to identify students in need of early intervention. Conduct proactive outreach and implement early-alert interventions to address academic, personal, or engagement concerns. Review transcripts, certifications, and other official documents to identify approved academic credit and evaluate course equivalencies. Refer students to appropriate academic, personal, career, and support services as needed. Assist students with proactive academic planning, creative problem solving, and effective navigation of University resources. Maintain regular communication with students through face-to-face meetings, phone, email, Zoom, and other approved platforms to build rapport and ensure consistent support. Coordinate and co-teach a cohort-specific student success seminar course. Collaborate with faculty, advisors, and key campus offices to connect students with academic and non-academic resources across the University and community. Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the position. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution (Master’s degree preferred). Experience in academic advising, coaching, student success, or a related student support role. Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse student populations. Proficiency with student information systems, data tracking tools, and virtual communication platforms. Preferred Qualifications Experience working in higher education, particularly at an HBCU. Familiarity with retention strategies, early alert systems, and student success initiatives. Teaching or co-teaching experience, particularly in first-year or student success courses. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to analyze data to inform student interventions and decision-making. Strong problem-solving and coaching skills. Ability to manage multiple students and priorities while maintaining attention to detail. Commitment to student-centered service and academic excellence.
