GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES: The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer will be responsible for the independent operation of sonographic equipment and for performing and communicating the results diagnostic exams. The DMS will perform a variety of nonvascular and vascular ultrasound examinations with precision, professionalism and care. The DMS is responsible for daily operations of the sonographic laboratory, patient schedule, equipment maintenance and quality assessment (QA). The DMS will also assist in the administrative and clinical functions of Mid-State Health Clinic to deliver the highest quality of patient care. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Director of Radiology Services SUPRERVISION EXCERCISED: None RADIOLOGY DUTIES: Perform nonvascular ultrasound exams, including: Abdominal, pelvic (transabdominal and transvaginal), obstetric, small parts (thyroid, breast, scrotal, soft tissue), and limited musculoskeletal or specialty exams as assigned. Perform vascular studies such as carotid, venous, and arterial duplex imaging, abdominal aorta, iliac, and renal artery studies evaluations as well as ABI. Verify patient identity, review orders, and explain procedures clearly to ensure comfort and safety. Acquire and document high-quality diagnostic images for radiologist interpretation. Maintain ultrasound equipment and report service issues promptly. Enter and verify patient information in PACS/RIS systems accurately. Collaborate with radiologists, technologists, and front office staff to support efficient workflow. Follow all infection control, HIPAA, and safety protocols Performs clinical assessment and diagnostic sonography examinations. Uses cognitive sonographic skills to identify, record, and adapt procedures as appropriate to anatomical, pathological, diagnostic information and images. Uses independent judgement during the sonographic exam to accurately differentiate between normal and pathologic findings. Analyzes sonograms, synthesizes sonographic information and medical history and communicates findings to the appropriate provider. Coordinates work schedule Radiology Director and/or scheduling desk to assume workload coverage. Assumes responsibility for the safety, mental and physical comfort of patients while they are in the sonographer’s care. Responsible for the daily operations of the sonographic laboratory. Maintains accurate patient records. Ensures operation of sonography equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and techniques. ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES: Answer the telephone – Take accurate messages (name, phone #, time, purpose of call and when the best time to return the call) with appropriate problem solving. Patient scheduling –Answer phones and make patient appointments via the scheduling functions. Confirm that all pertinent patient information has been entered into computer system and that signatures have been obtained on all necessary consent forms. Understand and be able to access computerized information about patients, insurance, injuries and companies. When chart is complete, fax or mail appropriate material so it will be sent out according to specifications. Remove reports from fax and matches to appropriate paperwork. Scan and attach documentation to electronic files. Continuously communicate with clinical staff. CLINICAL DUTIES: Always follow universal precautions Explain treatment procedures and prepare patient and exam room for examination. Complete medical chart to include medical services rendered, test results, and supplies used. Perform patient callbacks, arrange referrals and testing, and schedule follow‐up appointments. EDUCATION: Graduate of an accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography program. High school graduate or equivalent. Satisfactory completion of Radiologic Technology training in an AMA-approved school. Graduate of a formal Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program or Cardiovascular Technology Program that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) LICENSE/ CERTIFICATION: RDMS (Abdomen and/or OB/GYN) required; RVT or RVS required or obtained within 6-12 months of hire. Current certification with ARRT or ARDMS Current New Hampshire License BLS certification SKILLS and APTITUDES: 1+ year of outpatient ultrasound experience preferred. Excellent patient care, communication, and technical skills; ability to work independently in a fast paced environment. Ability to effectively operate sonographic equipment. Ability to evaluate sonograms to acquire appropriate diagnostic information. Ability to use independent judgement to acquire the optimum diagnostic sonographic information in each examination performed Ability to evaluate and communicate diagnostic information to the radiologist. Ability to escort or transport patients by wheelchair when appropriate. Basic computer skills including familiarity with electronic medical records. Detail oriented with excellent interpersonal communication skills. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. May require prolonged periods of standing, reaching and bending to move patients and heavy equipment. Manual dexterity to operate imaging equipment, computer systems, and accessories. Visual acuity to read images, screens, and documentation with accuracy. Hearing ability to respond to patient needs and alarms in a clinical setting. Mental Demands Ability to concentrate and maintain attention to detail while operating complex imaging equipment. High degree of accuracy and critical thinking in producing and reviewing diagnostic images. Capacity to follow strict protocols, safety guidelines, and physician instructions. Effective problem-solving and troubleshooting when equipment or patient issues arise. Ability to multitask and prioritize in a fast-paced, high-stress environment. Strong interpersonal communication skills to interact with patients who may be anxious, in pain, or uncooperative. Emotional resilience to handle exposure to trauma, illness, and potentially distressing medical situations. Environmental and Working Conditions Work performed in a healthcare setting with exposure to infectious diseases, body fluids, and hazardous materials. Potential exposure to radiation; adherence to strict safety and shielding protocols required. Frequent interaction with patients, families, physicians, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams. Work may involve variable shifts, Need to adapt to urgent and emergency situations, including rapid response to critical patients. Work environment includes bright lighting, imaging machine sounds, and occasional confined spaces. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as lead aprons, gloves, and masks as required.
