About the role pHathom Technologies is seeking a Research Assistant to join our Biocatalyst Engineering team. The Research Assistant will play a critical role in advancing our enzyme engineering projects, supporting the design, expression, and characterization of enzyme variants that accelerate the development of high-performance, ocean-ready catalysts. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with strong molecular biology and protein biochemistry skills who is motivated to apply their expertise to urgent climate challenges. What you'll do Lab Research & Execution * Perform molecular cloning (PCR, Golden Gate/Gibson assembly, restriction enzyme cloning). * Prepare and maintain E. coli expression strains for protein production. * Assist with protein expression and purification workflows. * Support enzyme activity assays and characterization of variants. * Conduct library screening in high-throughput formats (96- to 384-well plates). Operational Support * Maintain accurate lab records, prepare data summaries, and contribute to team meetings. * Order and prepare reagents, maintain lab supplies, and help organize workflows. Success in the Role * Delivers high-quality molecular biology and protein biochemistry work that accelerates project timelines. * Demonstrates strong attention to detail and independent execution of protocols. * Provides reliable data and contributes effectively to cross-functional team discussions. Qualifications Essential * Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, or related field. * Hands-on lab experience with cloning, microbial culture, and protein work. * Familiarity with protein analysis techniques (e.g., SDS-PAGE, BCA/Bradford assays, enzyme activity assays). * Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks independently. * Enthusiasm for applying biotechnology to climate solutions. Nice-To-Have * Experience with high-throughput screening or automated liquid handling. * Previous experience in a research or startup environment. SALARY RANGE The CA base salary range for this full-time position is $50,000–$60,000 + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role and level. Within the range, we determine individual pay using factors like job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
