GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of preventative maintenance and repair tasks on County facilities and equipment. This position repairs electrical, plumbing systems, HVAC, and other mechanical systems in County buildings. This position also provides assistance with minor building construction, renovation, installation, and general carpentry work. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, painting, drywall, line striping parking lots, flooring repair, repairing roof leaks, moving office furniture, carpet install, landscaping, and janitorial assistance. This role assists the Director and to serves as Director in the absence of the Director.

  • Installs and repairs HVAC equipment.
  • Troubleshoots and diagnoses system problems.
  • Repairs and installs electrical equipment.
  • Paints buildings and structures as required.
  • Installs sheetrock in various facilities.
  • Constructs walls and performs other carpentry duties.
  • Installs carpet and other types of flooring.
  • Provides maintenance on mechanical locking systems.
  • Installs and repairs plumbing systems.
  • Performs minor renovations.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on buildings.
  • Constructs and forms concrete.
  • Lays construction blocks.
  • Performs routine maintenance on various equipment.
  • Assists with custodial duties.
  • Assists with interoffice mail delivery.
  • Assists with grounds keeping duties.
  • Purchases materials, supplies, parts, etc. for work orders with County purchasing credit card according to County policy.
  • Cuts grass.
  • Trims trees.
  • Performs landscaping.
  • Installs drywall.
  • Installs flooring.
  • Assembles furniture and hangs bulletin boards.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requirements

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge and training in HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems.
  • Ability to interpret technical procedures, manuals, and reports.
  • Good mathematical skills.
  • Basic masonry, electrical, and carpentry skills.
  • Customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to operate computerized equipment.
  • Ability to safely use various hand tools.
  • Knowledge of SC State Statutes.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High School Diploma or equivalent, and three (3) years of technical training in HVAC, electrical, and/or plumbing; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.


LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS:

Required: Valid driver's license.

Preferred: None.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The work is very heavy work which requires exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. 

This position has the following special vision requirements: close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less); distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more); color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors); peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up or down and to the left and right when vision is fixed on a given point); depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships); adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus). 


WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed in a demanding indoor and/or outdoor work environment; may encounter noise, weather, extreme temperatures, moisture, humidity, dust, odors, fumes, gases, poor ventilation, vibration, electrical hazards, mechanical hazards, chemical hazards, burn hazards, bio-hazardous waste, moving mechanical parts, or working in high places. In the performance of their duties, employees may be required to use personal protective equipment such as face masks, goggles, boots, gloves or eye shields.
