Hiring Unit: The Computational and Data Systems Institute (CDSI) aims to connect, complement, and amplify the rich ecosystem of McGill investments at the nexus where computing, data, and systems meet – particularly around AI and data science. As part of its mission, CDSI offers workshops on topics related to programming languages, data science, machine learning, natural language processing, cluster computing, and advanced statistical methods. Workshops are 2h or 3h long during the Fall and Winter terms. In the summer, we offer week-long camps. CDSI is looking for currently registered undergraduate or graduate McGill Students to become Learning Assistants for these workshops. Under the direction of the immediate supervisor, Kiwon Lee, the Learning Assistants may perform some or all the listed general administration functions below. These functions are of moderate complexity and the incumbent performs them using established instructions. Position Summary: Act as technical facilitator in person and/or remote delivery, particularly in large classes. Attend at least one mandatory meeting Provide Workshop Attendees technical support during fixed delivery. Provide technical support to one or more Workshop Instructors for in-person and/or remote delivery. Includes but is not limited to course mechanics, course content and technical support for faculty and students Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities Communication Skills: Maintaining effective communication with CDSI staff, instructors, and participants. Introducing themselves at the beginning of each workshop. Punctuality: Responding promptly to emails from CDSI staff and arriving on time for workshops. Sense of Responsibility: Notifying CDSI staff or instructors 24 hours in advance if unable to attend scheduled workshops. Computer Systems Workshop: Preferably students in Computer Science or Software Engineering. ML & NLP: Preferably those with project experience in these areas. Priority given to coursework such as COMP 551 (Applied Machine Learning), COMP 345 (From Natural Language to Data Science), COMP 550 (Natural Language Processing). Advanced Statistics: Preferably graduate students in Statistics. Data Science in Python/R: Preferably those with project experience in each language. AI/Society: Preferably those with programming experience in non-STEM domains. Minimum education, certification and experience: High School Diploma with one year of relevant experience in the field of work.
