JOB SUMMARY This position plays a crucial role in ensuring the University’s compliance with health and safety regulations. This position involves providing training, conducting inspections, performing risk assessments, and maintaining effective communication on safety initiatives. The Safety Associate also serves as a resource on Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) matters, supporting University Units in meeting regulatory standards, guidelines, and best practices. Key responsibilities include offering consultation and resources to the University’s Joint and Local Occupational Health & Safety Committees, Operational units, and Academic units within the University. These consultative activities are to provide and effectively enhance workplace safety and compliance with Federal Occupational Health and Safety regulations, WorkSafeBC Regulations, and applicable UBC Policies. The Safety Associate will also support the development of web-based health and safety training for the broader University community. Additionally, this role requires close collaboration with UBC safety personnel, faculty, and staff to design, implement, and oversee comprehensive OH&S programs across the institution. ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS This position reports to the SRS Advisor, Education Programs & Planning and works closely with the University Community on health & safety initiatives. This position works closely with personnel in UBC administrative offices as well as UBC Faculties, departments, and ancillary operations. The incumbent may represent the University with external regulatory agencies including WorkSafeBC and health & safety colleagues from other institutions. WORK PERFORMED Serves as a dedicated resource for Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committees (JOHSCs), providing guidance and support on safety reporting systems; Responsible for developing course materials under the direction of safety program advisors; Provides specialized/tailored training sessions as required to faculty, staff and student workers; Responsible for participating in the development of departmental programs to achieve OH&S objectives; Responsible for conducting field inspections in a variety of workplace types, including moderate to high risk assessments; Responsible for participating in developing, implementing and maintaining program-related communications strategies including resource documents, reports and manuals; Responsible for conducting research and analyzing trends as directed; Responsible for supporting UBC Safety, Ethics and Compliance Committees as assigned; Conducts Incident/Accident reviews and investigations, and promotes the resources and programs offered by SRS; Conducts compliance audits of Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committees and other safety-related programs to ensure they operate in accordance with regulatory requirements and UBC policies; Provides training to supervisors on elements of safety programs; Works on writing and processing necessary amendments to the existing program documents; CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR Work supervised by SRS Advisor, Education Programs & Planning. This position supports the implementation of safety program practices to conform to various regulations, federal (WHMIS, TDG) and provincial (WorkSafeBC, BC Fire Code) through the development and implementation of safety related training and auditing functions. Inadequate training or consultation could result in serious injury or disease to faculty, staff and students; loss of equipment or facilities; fines and legal liability to UBC as well as loss of reputation to UBC. SUPERVISION RECEIVED This position performs responsibilities under the direct supervision of the SRS Advisor, Education Programs & Planning. SUPERVISION GIVEN This position does not directly supervise full or part-time staff. This position provides functional supervision to ensure compliance of all individuals, including faculty and staff. QUALIFICATIONS College Diploma in an applicable field. - Diploma or Certificate in Occupational Safety or applicable field. Canadian Registered Safety Professional designation is an asset. Training experience is required. Minimum of two years’ experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. - Thorough and demonstrated understanding occupational safety in both office and laboratory settings. Demonstrated working knowledge of pertinent regulations (WorkSafeBC related regulations, guidelines and best practices. General knowledge in biosafety, chemical safety, hazard assessment and control, occupational health and safety, and radionuclide safety and methodology is an asset. Demonstrated high level of written and oral communication including presentations in group settings. Conflict resolution and interpersonal skills are essential. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary team. Proficient in Windows operating systems and various Microsoft applications. Valid driver's license.
