Head of Compliance (SMF16) Compliance, UK Remote Overview The Head of Compliance is a pivotal leadership role, serving as the firm's Compliance Oversight (SMF16) under the Senior Managers and Certification Regime (SM&CR). You will report directly to the Director of Risk & Compliance Operating within the high-cost short-term credit and credit broking sector, you will not just ensure adherence; you will be the authoritative voice responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining a future-proof compliance framework that actively enables strategic, compliant growth. This role demands an experienced leader who provides proactive oversight, guidance, and strategic challenge to manage both conduct and regulatory risk effectively. Your unwavering commitment to the fair treatment of customers will directly shape our operations and ensure the consistent delivery of good customer outcomes in line with the Consumer Duty. Key responsibilities Strategic Governance & Accountability Accountability for the Framework: Hold direct accountability for the design, implementation, and maintenance of an effective compliance framework, policies, and monitoring plan that supports strategic objectives. Committee Contribution: Contribute to the Risk & Compliance Forum as a key member, providing updates on compliance performance, key risks, and Consumer Duty metrics. Senior Management Reporting: Present robust compliance findings and recommendations to Senior Management and the Risk & Compliance Forum, ensuring they are fully informed on regulatory risk appetite and emerging threats. Regulatory Liaison: Act as the primary contact for regulatory engagement, including managing and preparing for all interactions with the FCA, in support of the Director of Risk & Compliance. FCA Submissions: Ensure timely and accurate regulatory submissions, including FCA returns, notifications, and responses to regulatory enquiries. Conduct Risk, Assurance & Consumer Duty Consumer Duty Ownership: Own the continuous oversight and improvement of the firm's approach to Consumer Duty, ensuring ongoing alignment with the cross-cutting rules and outcomes monitoring expectations. Thematic Monitoring: Lead and undertake thematic and risk-based compliance monitoring. Regulatory Foresight: Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the regulatory landscape affecting HCSTC and credit broking, providing early insight into emerging risks and regulatory change to mitigate impact. Leadership & Business Partnering Team Leadership: Lead the day-to-day operation of the Compliance function, providing leadership, guidance, and development to the Compliance team. Strategic Advice: Provide pragmatic and commercially balanced compliance advice to support business initiatives, product development, and marketing activities. Embed Compliance: Collaborate effectively with business leaders to ensure compliance considerations are embedded within operational processes and decision-making. Training & Culture: Develop and deliver compliance training across the business to promote a strong compliance culture and awareness of regulatory obligations. Your skills & experience Essential Proven Track Record in the Sector: Proven track record in a senior compliance role within the consumer credit sector (preferably High-Cost Short-Term Credit or adjacent lending activity) having successfully managed or led a compliance team. Regulatory Command: Strong, authoritative understanding of the FCA Handbook (particularly CONC, SYSC, PRIN, and DISP), the Consumer Duty, and all associated regulatory expectations for HCSTC lenders. Strategic Influencer: Excellent stakeholder management and influencing skills, with the demonstrable ability to act as a trusted and pragmatic business partner and successfully challenge Senior Management and business leaders where necessary. Complex Problem Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret complex regulations into clear, practical, and commercial business requirements. Executive Communication: Confident communicator able to articulate compliance expectations clearly, adapting style for Senior Management, and non-specialist audiences. Regulatory Engagement Experience: Direct experience engaging with the FCA and handling complex regulatory correspondence and interactions. Leadership Qualities: Proactive, organised, and adaptable leader, with the ability to balance multiple priorities in a growing and fast-paced business. Integrity: Demonstrates sound judgment, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the fair treatment of customers. Desired Professional Qualification: Professional compliance qualification (e.g., ICA Diploma in Governance, Risk and Compliance, or equivalent) is preferred.
