The University of Hull Sport & Active Wellbeing service has a reputation for delivering first class sport services both on the main campus and in the community. This is an exciting time to be part of the Sport & Active Wellbeing team and play a role in delivering an excellent customer experience for our students, staff, and community in the region’s premium sport and fitness facilities. Reporting to the Head of Sport, the post holder will work closely with colleagues within the Sport & Active Wellbeing department, the wider directorate and other key areas across the university. The post holder is responsible for the full operational management of the Hull Sport Park facilities and fitness services ensuring that facilities are safe, clean and compliant with University of Hull and industry standards. Working closely with the Head of Sport and Hull Sport Management Team, the post holder will play a significant role in the growth and development of the Sport & Active Wellbeing service, contributing to the creation, planning and delivery of the department’s strategic and business objectives.The post holder will fulfil the role of Department Deputy, supporting the Head of Sport in their absence providing leadership and guidance to Hull Sport colleagues across all teams. This may include planning and organising resources while ensuring teams uphold the highest standards of customer service and student experience in its operations. The primary areas of responsibility within the role are leading a business area dedicated to the day-to-day operational delivery within the Hull Sport Park facilities providing an excellent experience to our students, staff and local community. With support from the Facility Manager, Fitness Manager and Assistant Facility managers, the role holder will have overall management of all customer enquiries and complaints to ensure they are dealt with appropriately and professionally, and escalated if required. The General Manager will lead, manage and develop the Operational arm of the Sport & Active Wellbeing service (operations team, reception & fitness) fostering behaviours, cultures and practices that align with those of the department and wider directorate. They will have overall responsibility for the continual review and development of services that enhance customer experience and generate further income. Working closely with the Booking and Events Manager and Fitness Manager, the General Manager will support business development and income generation opportunities specific to large-scale events and fitness initiatives, working with externals to do so. The role holder will have responsibility for fitness as a function including financial responsibilities. The role holder will offer guidance and assistance to staff from their business area during the planning and delivery of events where necessary. The role holder will manage the income and expenditure budgets for business operations and fitness; generating income from facility events activity that aligns with the department business plan, coordinate non-pay expenditure, build and manage forecasts and manage pay expenditure. Through the analysis and collation of financial reporting, they will inform Head of Sport of income generation progress and raise any potential financial issues or potential future issuesif and when necessary. The role holder will work closely with Finance to continually monitor income delivery against operational costs. In addition, the General Manager will also work collaboratively with the Sales & Experience Manager to identify external funding opportunities and complete relevant applications for submission as appropriate. Through a 365 day approach to appraisal and development and a robust training programme, all operational staff will have a full knowledge and skill to work within the Hull Sport facilities. The role holder will have responsibility for ensuring teams are fully trained, and identify any training requirements to deliver training as required, or delegate to managers. Oversee and support direct reports with people management elements, including performance or absence management, as well as managing potential misconduct cases to see them through end to end. The post holder will oversee the coordination of the operational staffing levels of the Hull Sport Park facilities in line with the operating safety standards and budget. They will delegate management tasks to managers within the team to ensure effective allocation of resources and budget for service delivery. The General Manager will be the departmental Health and Safety Manager responsible for creating, monitoring and reviewing all policies and procedures required to safely operate the Hull Sport Park. This includes but is not limited to standard operating procedure (SOPs), risk assessments, safe systems of work and legislative requirements. The role holder will also be expected to lead on any incident investigations following anything which is reported. The General Manager will represent Hull Sport and Student Services at wider cross campus health and safety groups and relevant projects, acting as a liaison to foster relationships internally within the University. They will also act as a liaison for external events to initiate and develop networks with other institutions and service providers and advertise the directorate’s services for potential clients The role holder will be a process champion for the department working with the Sport & Active Wellbeing Leadership team to develop a robust policy and process log for the department, ensuring adherence to this, as Sport & Active Wellbeing service work towards a customer services accreditation/award. They will role model and coach their teams on great customer service and best practice. Along with the wider Hull Sport Leadership team the role holder may provide Operational Facility Leadership (Duty Manager cover) when operationally required.
