Hours of Work: 35 hours per week Department: Fire Location This position is eligible for a hybrid work model. When attending an event or meeting in person, your primary office location will be based out of 1255 Fairview Street. Work location is subject to change at the discretion of the City due to operational demands. Effective January 2026 this role will be required to be on site 50% of the time each month. Department Overview Position Overview The Burlington Fire Department is a high performing, innovative department that is well regarded by the community it serves and the community partners with which it does business. Burlington Fire Department responds to approximately 12,000 emergency calls each year; operating out of eight fire stations. With a full-time department of approximately 239 staff and 20 volunteers. The Fire Chief is responsible for the overall administration of the Fire Department, including managing and directing the delivery of fire and emergency services, staffing, budgets and labour relations. The Fire Chief oversees code enforcement, fire safety inspections, fire prevention, fire suppression and rescue, fire investigation, public fire safety education, training and facility and equipment maintenance. Responsibilities As the head of the Department’s senior management team, the successful applicants will be responsible for: • Developing short and long-term plans to maintain service excellence and thoroughly prepare for future forecasted needs. • Monitoring financial, operational, technical and demographic factors and recommending the required departmental capital and operating resources. • Ensuring work of each functional team meets quality and efficiency standards, especially related to bylaws and legislation in accordance with the office of the Fire Marshal and associated best practices. • Formulate and implement effective City-wide strategies to ensure corporate alignment. • Oversee and approve budget planning and process. • Setting the overall direction and vision of the department; coaching and guiding senior managers; dealing with escalated performance management issues; and development of employees. • Stay updated on applicable legislation and regulations, industry trends and best practices to ensure Burlington is a leader in the fire service. • Engage in community outreach to promote safety awareness and risk reduction. • Work with the Association Executive to proactively address issues and maintain positive labour relations. • Develop and administer departmental policies and procedures. • Research and monitor emerging technologies and practices specific to the fire service and make recommendations to the team. • Participate in on-call rotation as a senior chief officer to provide effective leadership and decision making at an emergency situation and ensuring shared coverage 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during the entire year. Requirements The successful applicant will have: • Fire service experience, with at least 5 years in progressively more responsible positions and a minimum of 3 years in a senior leader position. • Education in fire service, business administration, public administration or related field. • Strong communication and leadership skills. • Exceptional analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. A valid (Insert Class) driver’s licence is required with an acceptable driver’s abstract (no more than three (3) driving related convictions or an accumulation of no more than three (3) demerit points in the previous three (3) years prior to the date of hire). Police Check Requirement This position requires the successful candidate to provide a clear criminal record check and/or a clear criminal record check with a vulnerable sector screening at their own expense.
