Job Description Field Service Design Engineer - Submarines Full Time (Shifts and Travel Required) Derby An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Field Service Design Engineer within the IMRS (Inspection Maintenance and Repair Services) Engineering Team in Derby. IMRS forms part of the Services Delivery Business Unit within Submarines. Our busy Engineering team is responsible for developing and deploying tailored repair and maintenance solutions to support the in-service maintenance of the UK submarine fleet, as well as support to submarine design and build programmes. As a Design Engineer, you will provide both practical and technical support to the engineering development projects, mainly at the IMRS facility in Derby, but there may be occasional requirements to support in the field. You will also perform a wide variety of engineering activities to support generation and approval of procedural documentation, engineering drawings and legislative compliance packs. What you’ll be doing: Support the development and day to day governance of the IMRS design capability. Provide support/supervision to other engineers with design and development tasks. Lead mechanical engineering projects from initial concept through to handover for implementation. Design mechanical components, mechanisms, and assemblies for all IMRS teams. Producing design solutions and engineering drawings. Technically check design solution and engineering drawings. Produce/technically check engineering calculations. Act a point of contact for statutory regulation compliance (UKCA/CE, Machinery Directive). Planning and scoping tasks, writing requirements documents. Present at design/gated review. Undertake build/assembly of equipment if required. Develop and test machines/equipment; troubleshoot and resolve design issues. Ensure all machines meet safety and compliance standards. Produce operator manuals, maintenance guides, and documentation packs. Providing technical support to sub-contract manufacturers and then undertaking equipment build/assembly activities. Producing development test plans, then performing trials and demonstrations to fully validate and commission capabilities. Shifts / Travel Although Derby based, the role will entail travelling to various sites across the UK for varying durations and will normally consist of working shift patterns, usually based on 12-hour days or nights dependent on the task. The number of days a year site deployed is approximately 90 days, although durations will vary based on workload and training. Although site work is generally pre-planned, there will be the requirement to support emergent requests to deploy with less than 48 hours notice. Whilst in Derby, flexible working hours are in place from 7:00am to 6:00pm, working a standard 7.4 hours per day. An understanding of sound engineering principles, including: design for manufacture, design for assembly and maintenance, health and safety, concurrent engineering, and ideally and appreciation of the protocols associated with nuclear applications. Experience of the practical application, and ideally ‘hands-on’ experience, of cutting machines, dressing machines. Previous machine design and development experience, and the production of the associated technical documentation. Familiarity with design tools/techniques and proficient in the use of CAD, ideally Siemens‑NX. Practical machining/workshop experience (Desired). A Mechanical Engineering related degree, or equivalent experience. For more than 60 years Rolls-Royce Submarines has designed, supplied and supported the nuclear propulsion plant, providing power for all UK Royal Navy nuclear submarines.
