Reports to: Head of Operations / Head of Engineering Location: Wood Green/ Palmers Green Direct Reports: Team Leaders, Storekeepers, Admins, Master Technicians, Engineers, Apprentices Main Stakeholders: Internal: Head of Operations, Head of Engineering, Technical Manager, Engineering Director, Finance BP, HR BP, Storekeepers, HS&E, Fleet Manager, Transcare, Training School, Route Performance, Trade Union, UKB Purchasing External: DVSA/OTC, TfL, Local PTA, Suppliers, Contractors, Service Providers Role Purpose: Oversee fleet maintenance and presentation in line with legislation, policies, and safety standards. Ensure key performance indicators (KPIs) are achieved efficiently and reliably. Responsibilities: Lead and deliver engineering performance and service targets Manage engineering P&L, budget, and forecasting Oversee workshop operations, shift planning, and payroll Ensure fleet maintenance, reliability, and compliance Manage stores activities, warranties, and inventory KPIs Deliver technical training and maintain audit compliance Prepare and present reports (daily, weekly, period-end) Health & Safety: Ensure premises meet health, safety, and environmental standards Supervise engineers, staff, and contractors with a duty of care Conduct safety audits and ensure compliance with O-Licence requirements Customer: Ensure daily vehicle availability meets peak requirements and exceeds statutory standards Quality: Analyse breakdown trends and implement improvement plans Ensure legal and company compliance in all records and audits Continuous Improvement: Promote lean strategies and efficiency improvements, reducing waste where possible People: Oversee recruitment, training, performance management, and staff development Manage staff schedules, holidays, and operational needs Financial: Monitor lost mileage, manage garage budgets, and contribute to business-critical projects Requirements: Strong engineering background, ideally in the bus/HGV sector Experience in leading teams, with excellent organisational and communication skills Knowledge of health and safety, with proven problem-solving abilities This job description sets out the main duties and responsibilities of the job-holder.
