Purpose of the Role The Editorial Performance Manager will work closely with the Editorial Directors and the Chief Editors of a designated group of Nature Portfolio journals to monitor and manage operational process efficiency; to analyse and improve workflows; to implement editorial policies and initiatives; and to own and develop reporting systems to meet the needs of the editorial teams. Crucial to the success of this role is the ability to develop effective relationships with relevant departments and key stakeholders – including Production, Art, Editorial Support, Office Administration, and centralised supporting teams in PP&I and Technology. Responsibilities ● Support, build and maintain editorial processes and workflows, using a strong knowledge of editorial processes and to contribute proactively to workflow improvements. ● Work with the Editorial Support and Production teams to ensure a smooth process for handover of manuscripts to Production. ● Act as the key liaison between the editorial teams and related departments for all matters related to implementation of new processes, initiatives and policies, to enable the successful implementation of such changes. ● Support, build and maintain tailored reporting systems where needed. ● Engage editorial (and other relevant) teams to adopt new workflows and processes associated with transitioning Nature Portfolio journals onto platform(s) and systems. ● Support, build and maintain documentation related to editorial processes and workflows, best working practices and training documentation (including those related to interfacing with other departments like Production and Editorial Support). ● Support, build and maintain other reporting, resources and forms to support journal operations and initiatives. Key Relationships ● Director of Editorial Performance, Nature Portfolio ● Nature Portfolio Editorial Directors ● Nature Portfolio Vice Presidents ● Head of Editorial Performance, Nature Portfolio ● Nature Portfolio Chief Editors ● Managing Editor, Nature ● Nature Portfolio Editorial Coordination team ● Editorial Support teams for Nature Portfolio journals ● PP&I Center of Excellence Experience, Skills & Qualifications Experience Required ● Good understanding of editorial workflows and processes and the needs and challenges of publishing high-quality research journals ● Experience of working with editorial teams and supporting editorial workflows ● Data analysis and reporting experience ● Track record of identifying issues and using own initiative to find solutions Desirable ● Experience of leveraging technology to drive process optimisation and automation ● Project management experience Skills ● Strong technical aptitude, with proficiency in key Microsoft 365 tools ● Excellent and proven time management and organisational skills ● Proven analytical and problem-solving skills ● Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of colleagues and stakeholders. ● Ability to act independently and take the initiative - a can-do approach, action-oriented and self-motivated ● Flexibility and adaptability, with an open-minded approach to change Qualifications ● Degree: minimum of BSc level or higher, or significant working experience in a similar role.
