It includes specialised secondary care services for children and adolescents, adults, older persons and those with an intellectual disability and a mental illness.

In terms of National Mental Health Policy ‘‘Sharing the Vision: A Mental Health Policy for everyone’ (2020) is the successor to ‘A Vision for Change’, which was launched in 2006.

Sharing the Vision focuses on developing a broad based, whole system Mental Health policy for the whole of the population. The policy is action-oriented and focuses on better outcomes for people experiencing mental health difficulties to bring about tangible changes in their lives and achieve better outcomes. By concentrating on outcomes, this policy supports significant changes in the delivery of Mental Health services. It considers the many varied determinants that affect good mental health and seeks to incorporate interdepartmental recommendations into the policy. The policy aligns closely with Slaintecare, the government’s 10 year programme to transform our health and social care services. There are a number of service delivery Principles which are central to this policy and these are the principles of recovery, trauma informed practice, human rights and valuing and learning.
