Job Description: POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY: The Cook is responsible for preparation, cooking and of food to the shelter clients in ways that enhance customer satisfaction and for ensuring this is done in accordance with hygiene, safety and food handling standards and regulations and within budget guidelines. ACCOUNTABILITIES: Oversee the effective operation of the kitchen. Maintain excellent standards in hygiene, safety, and all aspects of food handling. Ensure all equipment is cleaned, used, and maintained properly and that all storage and work areas are kept clean and orderly. Ensure all staff are aware of dietary restrictions declared by clients. Order food supplies and manage inventory, directing the storage and rotation of incoming supplies. Control waste with good stock storage, rotation, temperature control and menu planning. Participate in meetings and training as required. CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT: Internal: none External: none MANAGERIAL/TECHNICAL LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITY: Reports directly to: Shelter Supervisor Direct reports for this position: none FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT: Oversees the purchasing and budgeting of food, product supplies, and cleaning supplies. May be authorized to handle small amounts of cash. WORKING CONDITIONS: Works in a kitchen No travel requirements for this position. EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS: Education, Qualifications and Certifications: Food Safe Certification Experience and Knowledge: A minimum of two years of experience in a kitchen management or chef role including responsibilities for budgeting Skills and Capabilities (examples provided below): Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities. Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures. Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility. Knowledge of The Salvation Army Ability to integrate your Christian faith within the workplace. Careful attention to detail particularly in regard to all aspects of safety Demonstrated creativity in menu planning. Ability to use knowledge of effective body mechanics to handle bulk items and to tolerate standing, walking, bending, and lifting for extended periods. Successful candidates, prior to hiring, may be required to provide: • Background check consent • A clear vulnerable sector screening • A clean drivers abstract • Completion of our online Armatus Abuse Training and required Health and Safety training Compensation: The target hiring range for this position is $17.85 to $20.64 with a maximum of $24.77. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
