Learn more about Marchwood by clicking here. Job Description: This role is located in Marchwood, within the Cawood Scientific Environment Division. Chemtech Environmental, part of Cawood, was established in 2001 and performs a range of specialist analytical testing services to customers operating in the Environmental, Industrial and Waste Sectors from its two laboratories based in the South and North of England. Supporting the delivery of services through the efficient and accurate updating of sample records, preparation of samples for laboratory analysis & subcontracting, carrying out chemical analysis, and ensuring equipment is maintained in good order and any other areas of the business to provide a first-class service. Job duties and responsibilities: Organisation Communicate with other departments Maintain good housekeeping, cleanliness & tidiness within the department Maintain stock levels and place orders accordingly Health & Safety Champion Health & Safety throughout the department and actively promote good Health & Safety practice Ensure correct use of PPE Identify opportunities for improvement in Health & Safety General Quality Identify opportunities for improvement in procedures within the department Assist other departments with nonconforming work (NWR) investigations when required Sample storage Responsible for ensuring all samples are stored appropriately Responsible for maintaining sample storage system and logs Sampling Carry out sampling of soil samples from client’s sites. Assist with water monitoring activities from client’s sites where required Sample disposal Responsible for ensuring that samples are disposed of and recorded on the sample disposal log appropriately when requested Sample Preparation Responsible for preparing samples and subsamples as required on the sample preparation requirements form Responsible for preparing soils, other solids, leachates, pH and EC samples Responsible for appropriately subsampling and fixing water samples where required or requested Responsible for ensuring that the sample preparation log is accurately completed Equipment & calibration Carry out daily checks and calibrations as required Ensure that soil drying cabinets are maintained at correct temperatures as per MCERTs (soils) requirements (≤ 30 °C) Carry out equipment trouble shooting and maintenance where required Internal AQC Prepare internal AQC material if requested/ Maintain AQC charts Monitor stock levels of AQC material and communicate reduced levels to the Senior Technician Responsible for carrying out monthly contamination sand checks for each soil mill and submit them for analysis Responsible for identifying additional potential cross-contamination and raise issues with Senior Technician External AQC Responsible for preparing PT scheme samples, participate in PT scheme analysis and support other departments with PT failure reports when requested by the Senior Technician Analysis Undertake sample preparation and analysis Update worklists accordingly Training & development Responsible for ensuring training records are maintained in a timely fashion and completed within agreed timescales Cawood is the UK’s leading scientific group, recognised for its technical capability and value-added service to customers. Russell Vaughan Russell joined Cawood shortly after leaving university in our Mambo-Tox laboratory and has worked on the majority of our studies, from basic lab experiments to full-sized field studies. He has been integral to new method development over his many years with the company, and is a key contributor to our reputation for clear, accurate reporting that can go straight into a dossier. After taking time out to complete his PhD in plant molecular biology, he returned to the business in 2005 and now leads our team of study directors at Mambo-Tox. Russell enjoys working at Cawood because of our excellent team of people and our mission to support agriculture in meeting the needs of society whilst reducing its environmental impact. Sean Stevenson Sean joined Cawood as a biochemistry graduate to work in the NRM soil analysis laboratory. Over the last 19 years he has worked his way up through sales and business development roles and is now Divisional Managing Director for Cawood Agriculture. Sean is responsible for creating commercial strategies which support and accelerate our growth. Having worked at all the different levels in the company, Sean is a firm believer in making the business a place where people can thrive. At the heart of Cawood is NRM, the UK’s leading agricultural laboratory, founded in 1990. The Cawood group was formed in 2006 with the acquisition of the animal feed testing business, Sciantec. Since then, we have grown rapidly through our strong relationships with customers, our ongoing investment in people and equipment, and the acquisition of businesses that complement or expand our services. This development has allowed us to increase our range of services and extend our reach into global markets.
