The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the oldest student association in Canada and has been a central student organization at Queen's since its founding in 1858. Today, the AMS acts as a service, advocacy, and governing body on behalf of all students enrolled in AMS-affiliated programs at Queen's University. The AMS is a not-for-profit entity created by the Society to ensure its continuing financial viability by overseeing the management of its services and associated financial affairs. It is bound by the By-laws and corporate philosophy of our Mission and Operating statements as set out in the AMS Constitution. In addition to providing wage-based service staff positions for students wanting employment, the AMS seeks to support the Society's broader objectives through the provisioning of a high quality, relevant range of student funded services, that provide a wide range of employment opportunities and meaningful out-of-classroom learning and skill acquisition experiences for students. Job Description The Social Issues Commission (SIC) seeks to facilitate dialogue, education, and engagement on all matters related to equity, identity, and anti-oppression. The Accessibility Initiatives Lead oversees the hiring and facilitation of the AI committee, advocating for a more accessible campus for students with disabilities and raising awareness among students, faculty, and Queen’s administration about disability and the realities of ableism. This role involves facilitating educational events, managing the Accessibility Initiatives committee and supporting students with disabilities. Job Competencies: Communication Organization Ownership Cultural Sensitivity Job Duties: Support and collaborate with other SIC staff and volunteers Participate in committee member hiring for the following year Report to SIC External for student-facing programming (i.e. educational and social programming) Report to SIC Internal for hiring, training, and policy work Organize and lead in fulfilling Accessibility Initiative Committee's mandate Oversee marketing, selection committee, and disbursement of Accessibility Initiative Grants Build a consistent stream of awareness and education campaigning throughout the year (e.g. social media, boothing, events) Foster a culture of collaboration to reflect the intersectionality of accessibility/disability/neurodiversity issues by regularly meeting with the Accessibility Initiatives Lead, Indigenous Initiative Lead, and Black Initiative Lead Create spaces for students with disability at Queen's to participate in advocacy and policy work facing institution of AMS and Queen's University Maintain close communication with Queen's Student Accessibility Services (QSAS) to minimize overlap and amplify student voices to inform QSAS resources/programming Facilitate a smooth transition process Exhibit a working knowledge of volunteer portfolios Monitor volunteer performance to ensure it is aligned with established standards to mitigate disciplinary action in accordance with established procedures and notify Senior Manager of any issues that arise Ensure all complaints are addressed and handled professionally, leaving the customer with a positive resolution Assist with new employee training by positively reinforcing successful performance and giving respectful and encouraging coaching as needed Maintain a calm demeanor during periods of high volume or unusual events to set a positive example for your team Complete all assigned tasks efficiently and attentively Maintain timely communication with your direct supervisor Respect and adhere to all company policies, procedures and ethical standards Oversee staff to ensure work is being performed according to established standards Attend and fully participate in all in-person and virtual meetings Strive to foster a warm, comfortable and respectful atmosphere for all Always serve as a representative of the AMS and its mission statement Complete other job duties as assigned Job Requirements: Maintain regular office hours Sound analytical thinking, planning, prioritization, and execution skills.
