The Veterans Sober Living Technician (Tech) is a vital, boots-on-the-ground team member responsible for supervising day-to-day life in the sober living home. This position provides direct support to clients — the majority of whom are military veterans — by helping to maintain a clean, disciplined, and recovery-focused environment.
The Technician serves as a role model, peer support, and first line of accountability, helping residents adhere to program guidelines and stay on track in their sobriety. The role involves monitoring behavior, transporting clients to appointments, performing facility checks, administering drug and alcohol screenings, and reporting issues up the chain of command. Technicians are expected to maintain calm under pressure, respond to crises using de-escalation techniques, and demonstrate compassion without compromising boundaries.
This position is ideal for someone with prior military experience or familiarity with veteran culture who values structure, teamwork, and service.
Key Responsibilities:
Client Supervision & Support (Primary Focus)
- Maintain visual and verbal supervision of clients in all settings: at the facility, in the community, and during transport.
- Monitor daily routines, including wake-up, curfew, chores, medication times (if applicable), and scheduled meetings or treatment sessions.
- Model and encourage personal responsibility, respectful communication, and peer accountability.
- Address rule violations using calm, direct, and professional interventions; document and escalate when necessary.
- Support residents in times of emotional difficulty, relapse risk, or interpersonal conflict, using trauma-informed and veteran-sensitive approaches.
- Maintain professional boundaries while still building rapport and trust with veteran clients.
Transportation & Community Engagement
- Safely transport clients in a company vehicle (often a 15-passenger van) to and from appointments, treatment centers, volunteer assignments, court dates, 12-step meetings, and other approved activities.
- Ensure accountability during group outings and verify attendance at required destinations.
- Conduct vehicle inspections before and after use and report maintenance or safety issues.
Monitoring & Compliance
- Conduct regular and random drug and alcohol testing (urinalysis and/or breathalyzer), ensuring documentation and chain of custody procedures are followed.
- Perform scheduled and random room inspections and property searches to ensure compliance with house rules.
- Enforce curfew and visitor policies; report any contraband, behavioral incidents, or unauthorized activity.
- Track sign-in/sign-out logs, attendance at required activities, and any client movements outside the facility.
Facility Maintenance & Property Oversight
- Oversee client completion of daily chores and maintain high standards of cleanliness and order in common areas.
- Upon client discharge, reset and sanitize their living space (laundry, disinfect surfaces, inventory check, and restocking).
- Perform light facility upkeep (changing light bulbs, restocking supplies, basic cleaning) and report larger maintenance issues to the facilities department.
- Inventory household goods, cleaning supplies, and food items; submit resupply requests as needed.
Documentation & Communication
- Complete detailed shift reports at the end of each shift, noting client behavior, incidents, transportation activity, and any notable observations.
- Write incident reports for policy violations, behavioral concerns, or critical events.
- Maintain daily logs for drug testing, room inspections, and any disciplinary actions.
- Relay urgent updates to the Lead Tech or Supervisor in real-time.
- Participate in staff debriefings, case reviews, or program meetings as requested.
