The Packaging Engineer will play a critical role in optimizing how large, heavy, industrial products are packaged, shipped, and received. This position involves hands-on evaluation of packaging processes, identification of product damage risks, and development of clear, practical solutions to improve protection, labeling, and handling. The role blends on-site assessments with remote collaboration to create standardized procedures, ensuring products arrive safely while supporting operational efficiency. Ideal candidates are independent, detail-oriented, and experienced in industrial packaging systems, with the ability to translate observations into actionable documentation and training tools. The position offers exposure to multiple facilities, innovative processes, and opportunities to influence best practices across operations.

Accountabilities

·        Conduct on-site packaging assessments for heavy equipment, dock levelers, and related components to evaluate current packaging, blocking, and strapping methods.

·        Identify sources of damage during transit, including handling errors, material issues, or inadequate process controls.

·        Review labeling practices and recommend improvements for durability, weather resistance, and legibility.

·        Collaborate with Quality and Operations teams to gather process knowledge and ensure alignment with best practices.

·        Develop clear, visual packaging SOPs, inspection criteria, and acceptance standards for shipped products.

·        Prepare and present prioritized improvement plans, highlighting quick wins, high-risk issues, and long-term changes.

·        Support follow-up discussions and training to implement standardized packaging across multiple sites.

Requirements

·        Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.

·        Minimum 5 years of hands-on packaging engineering experience in industrial, machinery, or heavy-equipment manufacturing.

·        Experience developing protective packaging systems, including blocking, bracing, and load securement for large, non-crated items.

·        Expertise in labeling materials and adhesives suitable for metal parts exposed to outdoor conditions.

·        Strong skills in documenting packaging processes, SOPs, and inspection checklists.

·        Ability to perform root-cause analysis and translate findings into actionable recommendations.

·        Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work with Operations, Quality, and Manufacturing teams.

·        Self-motivated and able to work independently on-site, managing time and deliverables without daily supervision.

·        Preferred experience: dock equipment, heavy machinery, automotive packaging, ERP or PLM systems, sustainability practices, and operator training materials.

Benefits

·        This is a 1099 independent contractor position; compensation will be commensurate with experience and scope of work.

·        Flexible, project-based work (20–40 hours/week) with potential for extension.

·        Opportunity to work on multiple client sites and contribute to process improvement initiatives.

·        Gain hands-on experience with industrial packaging standards, labeling, and protective systems.

·        Professional development by collaborating with diverse teams and leading packaging standardization projects.
