Job Title Indirect Tax Manager (Group Tax) Department Finance-BG-UK Overview of Department The Finance Department provides financial reporting for the firm, including the preparation of partnership and statutory accounts, along with regulatory financial and capital reporting and appropriate tax filings. They manage payments on behalf of the business, payroll, pensions and process staff expenses. They also provide full Board support on all finance matters including support to business development initiatives as well as financial modelling to support decision making. The Tax team (incorporating both the Group Tax and Product and Investment Tax teams) sits within the wider Finance Department and provides support to the business on all tax issues impacting the Baillie Gifford Group (‘the Group’) and its managed investment funds. Purpose of Role This role offers a great opportunity to join the Group Tax team, reporting to the Head of Tax. As a newly created role focused on indirect taxes, it provides the autonomy to shape the position and make an immediate impact. The individual will manage global indirect taxes for the Group and its managed investment funds. You’ll provide valuable expertise and support to the business, help to strengthen Baillie Gifford’s indirect tax processes and controls and work closely with colleagues in the wider Finance Department and across Baillie Gifford to ensure indirect tax matters are managed effectively. Responsibilities Responsible for the timely and accurate delivery of the Group’s global indirect tax compliance and reporting obligations (circa 7 jurisdictions including UK, Ireland, Canada and Singapore). This includes the oversight of indirect tax returns (with input from other Finance teams), liaising with global tax advisers and responding to queries from Tax Authorities. Provide oversight and support on indirect tax matters applicable to the Group’s managed investment funds (including funds in UK, Ireland, Canada and Luxembourg). Manage the day-to-day relationship with our global tax compliance provider with respect to indirect taxes. Advise on indirect tax implications of firmwide projects and internal change initiatives. Contribute to an effective tax governance, risk and controls framework for the Group. Identify areas to improve the effectiveness of Baillie Gifford’s VAT activities. Work with other Finance teams to drive forward continuous improvements in indirect tax compliance, reporting and payment processes. Stay abreast of relevant UK and international indirect tax changes in market practice, legislation, and regulation and advise business areas of any implications that may arise. Work with other teams to ensure the smooth implementation of e-invoicing. Provide indirect tax training to other teams as required. Represent Baillie Gifford on industry VAT committees and groups. Provide support and assistance to the wider Group Tax team as required. Qualifications: Completed relevant professional accounting (CA or equivalent), tax (CTA) or legal qualification. Your knowledge and experience: You will have a strong indirect tax/VAT background with exposure to both indirect tax compliance and advisory matters. Keen interest in tax technology, data management and enhancing processes using technology and automation. Asset management or financial services experience is an advantage, though not essential. The type of candidate that we're looking for: We are looking for an Indirect Tax Manager from industry or professional practice who has strong indirect technical experience and is able to translate that into the delivery of Baillie Gifford's indirect tax requirements. You will be confident working independently but also able to build relationships both within the firm and with external service providers. Proven organisational skills are essential as the role will involve managing multiple deadlines. In addition, a commitment to driving technological efficiencies and enhancing existing processes will be essential.
