You are a Director, Engagement. (Social Impact Consulting)
Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Engagement, you play a leadership role in the design and delivery of large-scale consultation and engagement programs, with a particular focus on major infrastructure, transportation, and resource sectors. As a trusted advisor and project leader, you translate client objectives into effective communications and engagement strategies, manage multiple concurrent accounts, and ensure high-quality delivery across all phases of work.
You bring a deep understanding of public, private, non-profit, and Indigenous clients’ business models, operating environments, and definitions of success. You apply this insight to proactively identify risks, opportunities, and innovative solutions. You lead with confidence in both internal and external settings, drive business development, and mentor ChangeMakers team members to support professional growth and excellence.
What Are Your Responsibilities?
Strategic Leadership & Client Advisory
- Lead the design and delivery of consultation and engagement strategies for large, complex, and high-profile projects.
- Strategically assess political, social, economic, and regulatory environments to identify risks and opportunities, and develop recommendations that support client objectives.
- Adapt approaches and tactics in real time in response to evolving or unforeseen circumstances.
- Serve as an experienced, senior facilitator.
- Provide leadership oversight for project teams, including resourcing, performance feedback, and supporting career development.
Project & Program Management
- Set a high bar for client service excellence. Provide oversight from launch through execution, ensuring alignment with quality standards and client expectations.
- Lead client relationship development and the delivery of successful projects of all sizes – from short, sprint mandates to multi-year engagements.
- Manage team members, budgets, timelines and deliverables efficiently and effectively.
- Identify, monitor, and mitigate project risks, challenges, and issues.
Engagement, Research & Analysis
- Design, facilitate, and implement comprehensive consultation and engagement strategies and programs for large projects.
- Provide oversight and direction on research, analysis, and data interpretation, including advising on engagement and analysis methodologies and approaches, distillation of engagement data and reporting products.
- Familiarity with analysis tools including but not limited to: NVivo, Excel and Alchemer.
Quality Assurance & Writing Leadership
- Provide quality assurance for written project deliverables and business development materials.
- Demonstrate exceptional editing skills and oversee writing produced by other team members.
- Translate client and senior leadership feedback into clear direction for project teams.
- Serve as the final reviewer and editor before materials are delivered to clients, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and consistency.
- Produce high-quality, error-free written work under tight timelines.
Business Development
- Lead new business development efforts, including expanding existing client relationships, identifying new opportunities, and leading proposal and pitch processes.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, partners, industry peers, and communities.
What Type of Qualities and Qualifications Should I Have?
- Post-secondary education in a relevant field such as Communications, Political Science, Public Administration, Indigenous Studies, Journalism, Sociology, Economics, Environmental Studies, Law, or a related discipline.
- 10+ years of professional experience in consultation and engagement, with experience supporting project planning, development and impact assessment in major infrastructure, transportation, natural resources, or other relevant sectors.
- 5+ years of experience in project management and/or people management roles.
- Experience working with Indigenous communities or demonstrated in-depth knowledge Indigenous issues in Canada.
- Demonstrated understanding of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action.
Ideal Candidate Profile
- Demonstrated experience designing and delivering strategic communications and engagement programs with rightsholders, interest holders, and broader communities.
- Comfort leading politically sensitive or high-conflict engagements.
- Strong judgement and discretion.
- Experience supporting major infrastructure, transportation and/or resource development projects.
- Experience with impact assessment processes and supporting the Duty to Consult with Indigenous Peoples.
- Experience working within a consulting practice or as a management consultant.
- Bilingualism (English & French)
Salary
The Canada base salary range for this position is $100,000 - $115,000. Our salary ranges are determined by job and level. Within the range, individual compensation is determined by job-related skills and knowledge, relevant experience including professional and lived experience, and/or work location.
